Offline controllers: running a CNC without a computer
A handheld box that runs a job from a memory card. Which machines in the record offer one, and what it does and doesn't replace.
Most hobby CNC routers are driven from a computer: a sender program streams the G-code to the machine while the job runs. An offline controller is a small handheld unit that does the streaming instead, reading the job from a memory card or USB stick, so the computer doesn't have to sit next to the machine for the whole cut.
SainSmart's buyer's guide describes the idea in one line: "Wireless and offline controls offer convenient alternatives to a computer connection."
Which machines offer one
These are the pages in the record whose controller description mentions offline control, a touch screen or a pendant. Wording varies, so check the maker's page for whether the unit is included or sold separately.
| Machine | Controller, as published |
|---|---|
| SainSmart 3020-PRO MAX V2 | Grbl V1.1 with 32-bit TB67S109 drivers; upgraded offline controller |
| SainSmart 4040-PRO | Offline controller CTL4040; GRBL on a 32-bit MCU, TB67S109 drivers. NEMA 17 steppers. |
| SainSmart 3020-PRO Ultra | GRBL; offline controller included |
| Two Trees TTC450 Pro (500W) | GRBL; 3.5" touch screen |
| Two Trees TTC450 Ultra | GRBL; external 3.5" touch screen |
| SainSmart 4040-PRO MAX | GRBL on a 32-bit MCU, TB67S109 drivers. Offline controller CTL4040 sold separately. |
| FoxAlien Masuter 3S | Controller box with shortcut buttons; supports an offline controller. Four NEMA 23 closed-loop steppers, 2.2 Nm. |
| FoxAlien XE-PRO | Open-source grbl; offline control built in. NEMA 23 closed-loop steppers, 5,000 mm/min. |
| Two Trees TTC6050 | GRBL; 3.5" touch screen |
| FoxAlien CL-4x4 | Controller box with 2.4" touchscreen for offline use. Four NEMA 23 closed-loop steppers, up to 3.5 Nm. |
| Next Wave CNC Shark HD520 | Colour touch-screen pendant |
Two details worth knowing. The 3018-PROVer V2 is offered as "Machine Only" or "Machine + Offline Controller", although its FAQ says the machine "comes with an offline controller"; that's one of the contradictions on the record page. And Onefinity's compare page lists "Computer required: Yes" for the Apprentice and "No" for the Gen 2 Elite, which has an optional 15-inch screen.
What it doesn't replace
The G-code still has to come from somewhere. An offline controller runs a file; it doesn't design parts or plan toolpaths. You still need CAD and CAM software on a computer to make the file in the first place. How a desktop CNC router works walks through those steps.
