Desktop CNC Z height compared: every published figure

Z height for 41 machines, from 40 mm to 210 mm, and which makers say whether it's travel, clearance or cutting depth.

Z is the up-and-down direction on a CNC, and the Z figure is the closest a spec page gets to saying how thick a piece of material the machine can take. 41 of the 43 machines on this site publish one. They run from 40 mm to 210 mm. This guide lists them all, with what each maker says the number measures.

The five tallest and five shortest published Z figures on the site, as listed by the makers.

Not every Z figure measures the same thing

Z travel is how far the bit can move up and down. Clearance is how tall a piece can fit under the gantry. SainSmart's buyer's guide puts the difference in one line: "Working travel describes the cutting range; pass height describes clearance for stock and fixtures". Only ten of the 41 pages put a name to the figure (travel, clearance, cutting area and so on); the rest list a single Z with no label, usually as the last of three numbers. The work area guide goes through the terms.

Z as published. Inch figures were converted to millimetres for the machine list and back to inches here, so the inch column can differ slightly from the maker's own. "Not said" means the page lists a Z figure without saying whether it's travel, clearance or cutting depth.

Pages that give two Z figures

A few makers publish a second number. The table above uses the first figure; here are both:

Both Onefinity pages give a Z cutting area larger than the Z travel, and neither says why.

Z and price

More money usually buys more Z, but the bands overlap a lot:

PriceMachinesLowest ZMedian ZHighest Z
Under $500440 mm42.5 mm78 mm
$500 to $1,0001060 mm87.5 mm133 mm
Over $1,0002776 mm130 mm210 mm

29 machines publish 100 mm (about 4 inches) or more. At the other end, SainSmart 3018-PRO DIY Kit, Two Trees TTC3018 Pro and SainSmart 3018-PROVer V2 list 40 to 45 mm. All three are 3018-size machines.

What the figure leaves out

None of these numbers say how thick a piece can be once a bit, a spoilboard and clamps are in place, and no maker on the site gives that figure. Two machines don't publish a Z at all: FoxAlien Masuter Pro Max 2x2 and Carbide 3D Shapeoko 5.1 Pro 4x2.

We haven't tested these machines. The figures are what each maker's page said when it was last checked.
